Free furniture collection sounds simple, but a charity has to be able to sell what it takes. Check your items against the options below first. If the answer is no, you have a fallback that still saves you the lifting.

How to get a charity to say yes
Do
- Check sofas, armchairs and mattresses for a fire safety label
- Offer clean, undamaged pieces in good condition
- Send clear photos of each item
- Be ready to say what is not suitable before they ask
Don't
- Offer stained, torn or broken furniture
- Cut off labels or assume they won't matter
- Promise a charity more than you have
- Leave it to the last minute before you need the space
When it is more than a few items
Furniture rarely goes alone. A spare room, a loft or a whole property can mean far more than a charity will take.
If the council limit is the problem, see Basingstoke and Deane bulky waste collection. If you are over the border, there is Hart bulky waste collection.
For bigger jobs we do house clearance, furniture and appliance removal and general rubbish removal.

Questions about free furniture collection
Will a charity take my old sofa?
Only if they can sell it. That means it must be clean, in good condition and carry a fire safety label. If it is worn or the label is missing, expect a no.
Why do charities need fire labels?
Upholstered furniture sold on has to meet fire safety rules, so a label is how a charity knows it can be resold. No label usually means they cannot take it.
How much is the council collection?
The council charges £52 for 3 items, with no more than 8 items a booking. You book online and wait for a collection day.
Is there a limit on what you take?
No. We do the whole job in one visit, with no limit on items. You get a price up front, worked out from your photos.
